Can two nerds do it? Take the most epic journey across the Final Fantasy Universe ever? Can they avoid being knocked down in I, find the first Chocobos in II, play the long, lost forgotten cousin III, cleanse their soul in IV, save the crystals in V, blabber on and on about how great VI is, and then go beyond, into the world of 3D, emo, and fantastically absurd hair? Read, and find out!

OMG A POST

A funny quirk about cutscenes in FF6 is that an awful lot of them happen on the battle screen. This isn't something entirely new; FF4 of course has the infamous "Spoony Bard" battle cutscene, and various others (Tellah summons Meteo, spirits of former party members restore your health by praying/"wishing," etc.) But generally, the battle screen cutscenes in FF4 are about fighting. In FF6, your characters are happy to chat about any old thing while horrific metal automatons of destruction are looming over them.

My favorite part about this is that Terra actually takes a moment to lower her head and have a Final Fantasy Emo Moment of Silence (FFEMS,) which is usually characterized by speaking in ellipses. And all the while, the Magitek bots just kind of sit there patiently and wait for everyone to finish what they were talking about before you get back to the fighting.

Now right now, you're probably saying "Oh Kamarile, you silly ho. Don't you realize that it's a game and it's not supposed to be realistic?" And I would say to that, "Of course, you're utterly right. You HAVE to suspend your disbelief at times in games like this." I mean, would a thief, having stolen someone's clothes off of them in broad daylight in the middle of the crowd, take the time to try them on and decide whether they make his ass look too big right then and there? Probably not. But this is FF6 and this is how we do.

That's not to say that FF6 isn't realistic in some ways. The characters in this game more than any other in the series act and behave like real people rather than like anime cliches. But not in this regard. If you're going to play FF6 and like it, you've just got to embrace the silly stuff along with the emo.
